Shinjiro Tanaka is an artist whose practice is grounded in Hazama—a perspective developed through his experiences across cultures, artistic disciplines, and ways of perceiving the world.
Born in Los Angeles and raised in Tokyo, Tanaka has spent his life navigating different worlds. His experiences across Japan and the United States, advertising and art, street dance and contemporary art have shaped a practice that embraces movement, transformation, and connection. Rather than seeking fixed meanings or clear boundaries, his work remains open to change, allowing relationships between people, places, memories, and environments to gradually reveal themselves.
Working across painting, murals, installations, digital media, live visual performance, and participatory projects, Tanaka approaches each medium as a different language for exploring the same underlying questions. Influenced by his background in street dance, his practice is guided by rhythm, movement, repetition, and improvisation. Through the accumulation of hand-drawn lines, organic forms, and intuitive gestures, he creates works that evoke the rhythms of life and the invisible relationships connecting the individual, nature, and the wider world.
Following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Tanaka left his career in advertising and relocated to New York to dedicate himself fully to art. Today, based in Tokyo, he works internationally through exhibitions, public art, murals, live visual performances, and collaborative projects across Japan, the United States, and Europe.
Whether creating a painting, a monumental mural, or an immersive visual environment, Tanaka's work invites viewers to slow down, look more closely, and rediscover the hidden connections that shape our experience of the world.
